It’s Monday! What Are You Reading? 10/22/18

Reading List for Week of 10/22/18

I startedĀ Hurricane Child by Kheryn Callender which is set in the U.S. Virgin Islands and I’m already intrigued by the plot and setting. I’ll report back when I finish it! I’ve also gotĀ The Book of Boy by Catherine Gilbert Murdock andĀ The Lifters by Dave Eggers to read this week with holds onĀ The Season of Styx MaloneĀ by Kekla Magoon, 24 Hours in Nowhere by Dusti Bowling, Lions & Liars by Kate Beasley.

Last Week

I’m back on track in the reading department and it feels really good! I finishedĀ Harbor Me by Jacqueline Woodson in record time! I was so engaged with all the different characters and their stories. Jacqueline Woodson really packed in the “issues” into this title. But being the author she is, allowed each character to breathe a little as each character is dealing with their own story. This would make a really great discussion book for middle school students. I could easily see it being a community read title for a whole middle school to read together with extension activities to really explore the issues.

So last week, I mentioned how hesitant I was to readĀ Ghost BoysĀ by Jewell Parker Rhodes. It’s the story of a black boy who is killed by a police officer while playing with a toy gun in an abandoned lot in his neighborhood. The boy tells his story as a ghost and meets the ghost of Emmett Till as he navigates the world as a ghost boy, only able to be seen by the police officer’s daughter. Jewell Parker Rhodes is extremely adept at writing for middle-grade readers in an age-appropriate way that still manages to tackle issues that kids are well aware of in the media.
