Young Adult Genres: Fantasy
New month, new book list series! This month I’m diving into young adult titles! Over the past few months, I’ve shared picture books, chapter books, and middle grade stories, and I don’t want to leave out the teenagers, so here we go! Young adult novels are geared toward kids from ages 12 – 18. Most often, the protagonists of YA novels are on the older end of the age range and experiences. It’s important to remember that while some younger teenagers will be mature enough to handle many YA books, they won’t be appropriate for all younger readers!
Fantasy titles are always extremely popular in the young adult sphere. I’m not exactly sure why this is the case, but if I had to guess it’s the character-focused, coming-of-age stories that create such fans of the genre. The protagonists of fantasy titles may still be growing up, but they have control in a magical world that many teens are searching for in their real lives. Teens aren’t kids anymore, but aren’t adults and are trying to figure out where they fit into the world. I think they easily relate to this genre, which makes it extremely popular.
Whether teens are learning about fairy tales, folklore, or mythology from places and cultures around the world or are traveling to magical realms where spells hold power, these books also provide an escape from reality in a way that very few things can provide. While there are dozens and dozens of YA fantasy titles with female protagonists, it’s much harder to find male protagonists. I’ve found a few and shared them here because reading is for everyone and I want teens, especially, to be able to see themselves in the books I share.
Teen are often so busy that reading as a hobby tends to be pushed to the wayside, but it doesn’t have to be. There are great books that are being written for teens and accessibility to books is easier than ever now with digital copies that don’t require much else than some sort of technological device – cell phone, laptop, or tablet and a library card!

The Bad Ones by Melissa Albert
Goddess, goddess, count to five
In the morning, who’s alive?
In the course of a single winter’s night, four people vanish without a trace across a small town.
Nora’s estranged best friend, Becca, is one of the lost. As Nora tries to untangle the truth of Becca’s disappearance, she discovers a darkness in her town’s past, as well as a string of coded messages Becca left for her to unravel. These clues lead Nora to a piece of local lore: a legendary goddess of forgotten origins who played a role in Nora and Becca’s own childhood games. . . .
An arresting, crossover horror fantasy threaded with dark magic, The Bad Ones is a poison-pen love letter to semi-toxic best friendship, the occult power of childhood play and artistic creation, and the razor-thin line between make-believe and belief.
