Slice of Life Day 7: Finding Wildlife

I live in a very busy suburb of Philadelphia and yet if you look and listen closely enough, I’m always finding wildlife that surprises me. My dog, who I talk about fairly regularly here, loves early morning walks. We’re usually out the door before 7am strolling through the neighborhood. The length of time directly corresponding with exactly how nice it is outside.

I love this time with her because I always see, hear, and learn something new. Being able to focus on nature and get my body moving is a beautiful way to start the day. I have seen countless sunrises in winter with beautiful streaks of pink and orange across the sky. I never expect to see deer run across my path, or a fox slinking through the grass on his way home or a red-tailed hawk bothering the crows in the neighborhood, but they’re co-existing all around us. Lucky for me, every once in a while I catch a glimpse.

The most recent addition to the wildlife in my own backyard is a woodpecker. I just started hearing it within the past week and I think I even got a glimpse of him the other day in the neighbor’s yard. Woodpeckers have such a unique sound but are so difficult to track in the trees, they’re camouflage is spot on! I don’t often get a chance to pause and look around, Aria’s mission is to keep moving, preferably as fast as she’s able to go.

Soon, I’ll see the smallest aspects of spring on its way with new buds, sprouts, and greenery. Our walks will get longer as the weather gets nicer and I’m excited to see what the spring brings!

This is my third year participating in the Slice of Life Challenge. I’ll be sharing brief posts that show a glimpse of my life in story-format. I hope you enjoy just a slice of my life as a librarian, book lover, and blogger!

I love this line: “I never expect to see deer run across my path, or a fox slinking through the grass on his way home or a red-tailed hawk bothering the crows in the neighborhood, but they’re co-existing all around us. ” All the different verbs really bring the animals to life.
