Synopsis:

Michelle's Garden

“Former First Lady Michelle Obama had an idea. A big, inspiring, and exciting idea! She would grow the largest kitchen garden ever at the White House. This wouldn’t be easy, since she’d never gardened before: Where should she start? What tools did she need? What would she plant?

Everyone needs help when they’re learning something for the first time, even the first lady of the United States. So she gathered the help of local students, the White House staff, and even President Barack Obama. Together, they wouldn’t just grow a garden—they would inspire a nation!”

Review:

A simple introduction into growing your own vegetables that shines a spotlight on First Lady Michelle Obama’s mission while in the White House. She created opportunities to teach young people about the importance of eating healthy and trying new foods, while also donating fresh produce to communities in need.

This book is coming out at a perfect time as Michelle just recently announced her newest project with Netflix – a new show for kids. Waffles + Mochi will launch in just a few weeks on March 16. It follows two puppet characters as they learn and try food from around the world.

Pair this book and show together, take a trip to the grocery store as a family, and try something new in the kitchen!

Verdict:

This would make a great read aloud for an early elementary school classroom. It’s perfect for this time of year and could really work as just one piece on a unit about healthy eating. Combine reading, science, health, and history together into a lesson plan!
