Top Ten Tuesday: New-to-Me Authors I Read in 2020

I’ll be honest to say I cheated just a little bit on this list! I read a few of these titles in the past week or so. But, I wanted to get another chance to highlight some of the amazing debut authors that published books in 2020, so I decided, what the heck! Here are ten new-to-me authors I read in 2020!

Debut authors can have a really difficult time getting their book noticed by the masses. Publishing houses often have very little money in terms of the promotion of books. Especially beyond the typical ways – review journals, maybe some sort of extension activity, or promotion online to bookstores and libraries. But, how do you get a single book noticed in a sea of thousands being published every year? It’s not easy.

Check out my debut authors post that I did at the beginning of the year. I find, if I’ve seen the cover a couple of times, I have a tendency to pick it up because I’m already “familiar” with it! Jot some of your favorite on your calendar or add them to your Goodreads “Want to read” section.

Below are ten debut middle grade authors who published books during a crazy pandemic year! You’ll definitely want to add these to your TBR list!

Top Ten Tuesday: New-to-Me Authors I Read in 2020

  1. The Derby Daredevils: Kenzie Kickstarts a Team by Kit Rosewater, illustrated by Sophie Escabasse
The idea of roller derby sounds awesome, I personally am not coordinated enough to walk without running into something, so I don’t know that I’d be able to stay on my feet!
  2. Efrén Divided by Ernesto Cisneros
I just finished this powerful story of a family as they fight to bring their mom home after she’s been deported to Mexico. This wasn’t a topic that I’ve seen in middle grade fiction before and it definitely packed a punch.
  3. Eva Evergreen, Semi-Magical Witch by Julie Abe
A fantasy novel that surprised me with how much I loved it! I’m really excited to see that book 2 is coming out in August!
  4. Forever Glimmer Creek by Stacy Hackney
A touch of magic fills Glimmer Creek and the main character Rosie thinks that she’ll be able to get a miracle to bring her dad home. What she doesn’t realize is that the miracles of her small hometown are different than she first expected.
  5. From the Desk of Zoe Washington by Janae Marks
Zoe receives a letter from her dad in prison on her 12th birthday. What does she say to a person she barely knows and does she believe her dad when he’s innocent?
  6. How to Make Friends with the Sea by Tanya Guerrero
Pablo and his mom have lived in countries around the world, but all Pablo wants is to stay in one place long enough to call home. Pablo finds that his fears and anxiety seem to lessen when he assumes the role of big brother to Chiqui, a young orphan girl. Can Pablo find his courage not just for Chiqui, but for himself as well?
  7. The Lonely Hearts of Maybelle Lane by Kate O’Shaughnessy
Maybelle convinces the next-door neighbor to take her on an adventure of a lifetime to participate in a singing competition, where her estranged father just happens to be a judge. What Maybelle learns on the way is that sometimes the journey is more important than the destination.
  8. Martin McLean, Middle School Queen by Alyssa Zaczek
Martin shines as a Mathlete, but tries to remain invisible most of the time as he steers clear of the class bully. When his uncle takes him to a drag show, Martin decides he wants to try drag creating a vibrant, outgoing persona. But, what will Martin decide when his Mathlete competition and all ages drag contest are the exact same night?
  9. The Mutant Mushroom Takeover by Summer Rachel Short
A mysterious fungus is starting to take over Maggie’s hometown of Shady Pines. When she and her best friend Nate decide to take a closer look, things start becoming more dangerous. Will Maggie be able to learn the truth about the fungus? Or is it too late?
  10. Stand Up, Yumi Chung! by Jessica Kim
Yumi’s parents can’t understand Yumi’s passion for stand-up comedy. But, when all the other options to save her family’s restaurant fail, will Yumi have the courage to stand up for them?
