Books & Cooks Letter M: Mustard Seed

This year I’m going to be combining two of my passions – cooking and kid lit for Books & Cooks! I’ll be bringing you great recipes based on spices of the alphabet that pair perfectly with kid lit books! Next up? The letter M and spicy mustard seed!

Books & Cooks Letter M: Mustard Seed

Spice: Mustard Seed

The condiment, mustard, comes from combining spices and vinegar with mustard seeds. Did you know it takes over 10,000 mustard seeds to make an 8 oz. bottle of mustard? Mustard powder and mustard seeds can also be used in cooking as well as pickling and brining spices. Explore this spice and its number of uses in a new recipe or old favorite!

Book Review: The Pigeon Finds a Hot Dog by Mo Willems

How lucky for the pigeon! He’s found a hot dog, but a pesky little duckling wants a bite too! What better book to share than a book about a hot dog when talking about mustard. The Pigeon books are so much fun to read aloud for large groups in a storytime or snuggling together at home. Plus, if you don’t worry too much about looking silly, the Pigeon usually has a meltdown at some point and it’s fun to shout and throw a fuss!

Recipe: Cauliflower with Melted Onions and Mustard Seeds

This recipe, found on Food & Wine seems a little fancier than anything I would normally cook. But, I absolutely LOVE roasted cauliflower and can just imagine how tasty this dish could be. Plus, you add a little curry powder and it’s right up my alley!

During the month of April, I’ll be participating in the Blogging from A to Z April Challenge 2020. For my theme this year (Books & Cooks), I’ll be combing children’s books with cooking spices and including a recipe to bring the book into your very own kitchen! I love to cook and read, so I thought this would be a fun way to combine two of my passions. I’m getting hungry just thinking about it! Let’s dig in! And if you want to see what I’ve done in the past, check out the past few years – 201620172018, and 2019!
