Slice of Life Day 3: Musicals

I’m loving the new television series, Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist, on NBC. I don’t have cable television but came across this fun musical series on Hulu. The basic storyline is about Zoey who works as a computer programmer in a hip office space filled with male coworkers and a really angry female boss. One day she wakes up to find that she can hear people’s inner-most soundtrack that shares their deepest, darkest feelings with Zoey. Who, of course, feels obligated to help. It’s filled with great supporting characters and has some awesome music too.

And it’s not surprising how much I love a show that randomly breaks into song because I’ve had a long-standing love for musicals since I was a child. I believe my grandmother shared her love of musicals with my mom as a young girl. This is why during the Christmas season, all of my siblings can sing along with White Christmas and it’s a tradition that we’ve kept even as we’ve added in-laws to the family.

I’m not sure why I love musicals so much besides the family connection, but they’re some of my favorite movies to watch like The Sound of Music, The Phantom of Opera, Hairspray, Annie, Newsies, and Chicago. I love movies like Pitch Perfect that include singing throughout as well that are really musicals. There is something so great about adding gorgeous music to heartfelt and fun movies that makes me so happy.

What are some of your favorite movies to watch?
