Young Adult Genres: Mysteries

New month, new book list series! This month I’m diving into young adult titles! Over the past few months, I’ve shared picture books, chapter books, and middle grade stories, and I don’t want to leave out the teenagers, so here we go! Young adult novels are geared toward kids from ages 12 – 18. Most often, the protagonists of YA novels are on the older end of the age range and experiences. It’s important to remember that while some younger teenagers will be mature enough to handle many YA books, they won’t be appropriate for all younger readers!

We’re back to mysteries! And what you’ll find in YA mysteries, that you won’t see in titles for younger readers, is more graphic crime/murder scenes with more details and darker themes. You’ll find a lot of amazing mystery books for teenagers, but I tried to find recently published titles. While, backlist titles can be absolutely amazing stories, it’s hard to share backlist titles with teens because they see them as “old”. These titles should be fairly easier to find both in school and public libraries and even in local bookstores. What I love about a mystery title is that if you’ve got a teenager who is more hesitant to pick up a novel, mysteries are a great way to encourage reading. Page-turning thrillers are great for reluctant readers and many of these titles fit the bill!

Catch Your Death by Ravena Guron

When Devi, Lizzie, and Jayne get snowed in and stranded at the grand Bramble Estate, home of the wealthy Vanforte family, they find themselves accidentally right in the middle of a murder plot. The matriarch, Emily Vanforte, has been poisoned at her own dinner party, and whoever did it is still on the loose.

The killer could only be one of four people: Charles, Emily’s notorious politician husband; Lottie their seemingly perfect teenage daughter; Douglas, Lottie’s good-for-nothing boyfriend; and Tate, Charle’s nephew who is more than meets the eye.

Cut off from help, confined in an isolated house with a killer, and surrounded by suspects, the girls decide to solve the mystery before one of them becomes the next victim. But no one is safe with knives hidden under the floorboards, vanishing guns, and secret passages in the walls. And in a house full of liars, how will they ever discover the truth in time?

The Escape Game by Marissa Meyer and Tamara Moss

It’s all fun and games until someone ends up dead.

Now season five is underway, and new contestants are ready to put their skills to the test solving the show’s trickiest escape rooms. There’s Adi, the cryptographer; Carter, the math whiz; Beck, the wannabe game master; and . . . Sierra Angelos, the girl who got away with her sister’s murder. Or so everyone believes.

But Sierra’s not just here to win. She’s here for justice.

When the contestants begin uncovering clues that hint at the identity of Alicia’s true killer, it becomes clear that the stakes aren’t high just in this competition—they’re deadly. If these teens want to win—and survive—the game, they must solve the biggest mystery of all: who killed Alicia Angelos?

Flirting with Murder by Amanda Sellet

Some people visit Florida for theme parks and beaches. High school junior Virginia Tillis is there for murder. Accidents, electrocution, tainted hand lotion: every victim meets a different end at her grandmother Lainey’s rococo pink condo. Such is life (and death) when you roll with a crew of theater retirees who roleplay murder mysteries from the comfort of their own home in a game they fondly call Killing Me Softly.

But this summer, fictional murder has given way to the very real death of the building’s beloved owner and his dramatic last testament has the vultures circling, from estranged relatives to sleazy property developers, dead set on getting the most from his will.

Adding to the tension for Virginia is the appearance of Felix, the cute guy she met at the airport who turns out to be the grandson of one of the condo’s residents. With his charm and musical theater chops, he’s the person Virginia most wants to beat at Killing Me Softly. That is, until the day they discover an actual dead body while playing the game, forcing them to work together to figure out whodunit.

The only thing sixteen-year-old Mullory Prudence has left of her mom is a warning: “Run if the strange finds you.” But mysterious warnings don’t pay the bills or help take care of her sick Gran. One week full of lavish parties dripping with enchantments, in a mansion brimming with clues of the past, and everyone’s a suspect. To win, Mullory will need to untangle a twisted family web and decide who she can trust…

  • Whitaker Stoutmire, the golden boy who’s harboring deadly secrets?
  • Ellison Stoutmire, his closed off twin, who saw something she shouldn’t have?
  • Lyric Stoutmire the youngest sibling, exiled by the family and burning with resentment?
  • Or Mateo Maldonado, the only other outsider whose reserved manner allows him to hide in the shadows… At least at first.
  • But most of all, Mullory must ask herself, why? Why her? A question most strange, indeed.
