Slice of Life Day 2: My Favorite Reading Place

I’m going to be honest, I can read just about anywhere – and usually carry a book with me most places because you never know when you’ll have a few minutes to read a couple of pages.

But, my favorite reading place is a chair and a half. But, not just any chair and a half, the one that sits in the corner of my office by the window. It’s next to the floor to ceiling bookshelf my partner and I made for the space. My mom found it for me when she was out thrifting one day. It’s got a faded, old blue and beige country plaid pattern – nothing that I would pick out myself. It’s got a small hole in the armrest with a little stuffing spilling out.

It had a matching ottoman which was absolutely the best. Until one day when my adorable dog decided that the ottoman was a threat to the household and destroyed it. The stuffing was all over the floor with her sitting proudly in the middle of the chaos. Now, she loves to hang out chewing her bone on the chair as long as I don’t kick her off to read.

Early in the morning, when the house is quiet, I bring a cup of tea upstairs, wrap myself in a warm blanket and sit in this old, worn out chair as it carries me to far off places where I meet new people and live a life so differently from my own.

I can read just about anywhere, but this, is my favorite place.

The Slice of Life Challenge is something new I’m trying this month! I’ll be posting brief posts that show a glimpse of my life in story-format. A slice of my life as a librarian and blogger that I hope you enjoy!

You and I are similar in the fact that we can read just about anywhere. My favorite spot is a swing that once resided at my grandparents’ front porch on their farm.

I too have at least one book with me. Often more because I never know what mood I will be in! I used to have a wonderful chair and half that I read in too. Often I would throw my leg over the side and it would bob up and down while I read the hours away. Ah deep sigh…what a great memory. Reading is great no matter what!

This has me thinking of my reading habits and where I love to read the most…I will admit that most books I am reading lately are on my phone/tablet, but there is nothing liking curling up in my favorite chair and turning pages. Thank you for that reminder!

I also will read almost anywhere. I saw your title and thought “Hmm…I think my favorite place to read is ‘anywhere there is a book.'” Now I am curious about where I love to read most. I think I feel another slice coming on.

I can picture the spot you describe very well, that hallowed chair. Your view about reading reminds me of author Donalyn Miller, from whom I regularly quote the observation that time spent reading is ‘stolen’ from any number of other pursuits.

(I’m learning about a commenting wrinkle on your blog. My initial comment didn’t surface, so I’m going to double-post again. Seems like I should specify remembering my name/email/website for the comment to stick…)
