Storytime Theme: Lucy Cousins

If you’re struggling with coming up with a new, fresh theme for storytime, I’ve got a suggestion for you! Why not try and “author study”? Choose just one author to highlight, rather than focusing on a theme with books by different authors. It’s a fun approach to storytime (and can make your life a little easier too!). I’ve done a few of these before – Eric Carle, Karma Wilson, and Mo Willems to name a few. But, I thought it would be fun to share a few additional authors over the next few weeks.

Lucy Cousins has a very distinct illustration style with bright, bold colors and black outlines. Her most famous character is Maisy a small mouse who learns about the world around her in a variety of “First Experiences” books. But, Lucy Cousins has created a host of other titles that are also just as fun to share. These work well for babies, toddlers, or preschoolers so you can easily adapt this storytime to whatever age you’re working with. For this lesson plan, I kept it easy by selecting mouse-themed songs, rhymes, and crafts. But, you could also just use the songs you love the most. Because, honestly, when you’re enjoying yourself and relaxed, the kids definitely pick up on it! So, maybe it’s time to try something new at storytime and deep dive into an author study!
