Storytime Theme: Mermaids

I’m so glad that I continue to find themes that I have yet to explore! Today, that theme is mermaids! How have I never created a mermaid storytime before? Literally insane! So, without further ado, here’s my lesson plan all about mermaids. With this lesson plan, just like my others, I’m sharing a number of mermaid titles. These picture books have been published in the past few years and I know there are plenty more out there! So, find the books that works best for you! Never do a theme or a storytime that you feel so-so about. It’s a recipe for a lackluster storytime. You’ve got to like what you’re doing because your enthusiasm is contagious and when little kids see someone having a great time, they want to have a great time too!

I’ve also grabbed a few songs and some crafts as well. Not all storytimes have to include a craft, in fact most of my storytimes as a children’s librarian never included a craft. But, some libraries are able to include the craft and I like to provide options! This is my reminder to everyone, storytime doesn’t always have to be “storytime”. We just had a pirate party instead of storytime and read one book, did two songs, and a craft and the kids loved it! Far less books than our typical program, but it worked out really well and the families were asking for something similar to be added to the calendar soon. (I think we’re going to try a Bluey Party next). It’s sometimes fun to try something new and explore alternatives, it can be reinvigorating and a break without actually missing any programs!
