Chapter Book Genres: Mystery
So, last month I focused on highlighting genres for our picture book readers, this month I’ll be focusing on newly independent readers and offering up some genre suggestions in the chapter book arena. Let’s start with what is a chapter book. While the term gets thrown around for any book with chapters in it for kids, it’s actually a bit more nuanced than that. Chapter books are actually a group of books that are written typically for the 6-8 year old crowd who have graduated beyond the easy readers and are looking to move up to the next step in their reading skills.
They are typically under 100 pages, have a larger font, lots of white space (think 1.5 or double spaced between lines), and often include a number of illustrations to help readers decode the text. And of course, they have chapters. What many people call chapter books are actually middle grade novels geared toward an older audience (ages 8-12) that are longer, have a lot more text, and may have fewer illustrations.
So, when I talk about chapter books on the blog, these books are what I mean – short, controlled vocabulary, and heavy on the illustrative support. Today, I’m highlighting mystery books! Mysteries have always been some of my favorite books to read, and while you can find a lot of these titles, I thought I’d try to share some newer titles that your readers might be interested in! (I had done a post back in 2024, so I wanted to add some new suggestions.) Again, these are shorter and more accessible for readers who are ready for chapter books, but might be a little intimidated to move on from easy readers. They also make great read alouds as they’re quick to read, fast-paced, and again, have less text than a middle grade novel! Take a look at the list below and see if you can crack the case!

Hilde Cracks the Case: Hero Dog! by Hilde Lysiak with Matthew Lysiak, illustrated by Joanne Lew-Vriethoff
Nine-year-old crime reporter Hilde Lysiak is starring in her very own early chapter book series — inspired by news stories Hilde wrote in real life! In this first book, there’s been a break-in on Orange Street! Cupcakes have been stolen, and soon a pie goes missing, too. Hilde and her sister/photographer, Izzy, must interview witnesses and follow the clues. Can Hilde crack the case in time to post her news story online?
King & Kayla and the Case of The Unhappy Neighbor by Dori Hillestad Butler, illustrated by Nancy Meyers
Thor is in big trouble. Mr. Gary says he knocked over his trash cans, dug up his garden, and ate some of his vegetables. King and Kayla have to clear Thor’s name and find the actual culprit.
Analytical Kayla demonstrates that Thor isn’t big enough to knock over heavy trash cans and he doesn’t like vegetables. Sensitive King discovers evidence that someone else has been in Mr. Gary’s yard—and it’s not a dog. Who made Mr. Gary unhappy?
Lizzie & Lucky: The Mystery of the Missing Puppies by Megan Rix, illustrated by Tim Budgen
Lizzie is desperate for a dog. In order to convince her parents to get one, she has to come up with 101 reasons why she needs one. Lizzie is a master at making lists, so thinking of 101 reasons is going to be easy! Especially as she is deaf and could train one to be her hearing dog. But as Lizzie begins compiling her list, she witnesses an adorable puppy being snatched away and put into a van by a mysterious-looking man. Can Lizzie solve the case – and maybe find herself a loyal friend at the same time…?
