Storytime Theme: Animal Homes
This storytime theme was a little trickier to pull together and I honestly think it works better with a bit of an older audience – preschool and early elementary age for sure. What I do like about this lesson plan is that it offers a great way to introduce your storytime families to more of a STEM-focused program. Rather than fictional stories, today we’re going to learn about where animals live. And by using nonfiction picture books, kids can learn fun facts, while caregivers can learn how to share nonfiction books. You might not want to read a nonfiction picture book cover to cover, rather you can pick and choose a few pages or passages to share with readers. While I didn’t include basic science experiments with this lesson plan, you could easily add a science experiment to this program to make it even more robust. I stuck with some craft projects because, while they can be messy, they are typically easier to do at a larger scale! But, however you share this lesson plan, I think kids will enjoy learning about animal homes!
