Storytime Theme: Nursery Rhymes

Nursery rhymes are a great way to introduce little ones to skills they’ll need in school and when they begin learning how to read. Nursery rhymes help kids understand the smaller parts of words, rhythm, and rhyming concepts. I mean, there’s a reason why they’ve been popular for so long! But, with that, I will caveat that if you have a very multicultural or diverse storytime group, many of these rhymes might not be familiar with everyone as they are very European/Anglo Saxon history. I did try my best to find a few options that include some diversity.

But, if you are close with some of your storytime families, this would be a great opportunity to share rhymes from around the world as I would expect many cultures would have their own children’s rhymes! Many of these books are a collection of nursery rhymes rather than individual stories, so you might have to think about setting up your storytime a little differently than usual! You might want to share a lot of different rhymes or maybe the same rhyme from different books to see how it changes! The opportunities are endless, you get to pick what works best for you.
