Storytime Theme: Float or Sink
Have you ever wanted to try something a little bit different in your preschool storytime? Maybe stray from the book and song format? Why not try a STEM-based storytime? I know it sounds scary at first, but this one is pretty easy and could be a lot of fun! Start with the base that you’re familiar with – pick a book or two about sinking and floating (find one from the list below!), add one song, and then do a float and sink activity! All you need is a large-ish plastic bin filled 3/4 of the way with water and a bunch of different things you can find around your library! Then, all you do is talk about each item and ask the kids what they will happen and test each one!
I will say, from experience, make sure to grab two oranges – leave one as is and peel the other. It’s fun to see the difference between the two and I really think the kids will love it! You can offer another station or two if you’re feeling comfortable, but it doesn’t need to be more than that. And that’s all it takes, a simple STEM storytime for preschoolers that will teach them a little bit about density in a fun and engaging away!
