Storytime Theme: Basketball

It’s always funny to me when I review the hundreds of storytime lesson plans on my blog and I still find ideas that I’ve missed, like basketball! I’ve done baseball, football, and even just a generic sports theme, but never basketball! And then, while I was trying to pull together this book list of picture book titles, I realized that there may have been a reason – basketball picture books are not easy to find! There aren’t a ton of them out there and many of them are extra long, not suitable for storytime.

But, I tried to find at least a few that could work for storytime, plus a couple of songs and rhymes, activities, and crafts. I think this is one of those lesson plans that would probably work for a little bit of an older audience – preschool and even early elementary school age, rather than the very little toddlers. But, that being said, I think that older audience would love a sports-themed storytime, especially if you created some options for kids to practice their basketball skills afterward. This would be a great opportunity to partner with a local Parks & Recreation Department or a local kids’ sports league. In fact, you could even create a series of events highlighting different sports – I think that would be really cool!
