Storytime Theme: Painting

As I was finishing up this lesson plan on painting, I realized that I had just created a similar storytime lesson plan last year! So, while there are a few books that repeat on each list, there is a lot of brand new suggestions here to take a look at. While this could become a very messy program if you include a craft or activity, I think it’s important to share with parents and caregivers that painting doesn’t always have to result in a “product” rather it can be all about the process for kids and that’s alright (and in fact, preferred, sometimes).

Process art is the act of creating something without have a finished product in mind. It’s not a craft that comes with an idea of what it should look like. Rather, kids are given supplies and allowed to explore those materials and use their creativity and imagination to just create for the sake of creating. TinkerLab has a great article that is a fantastic resource for better understanding what process art is and it’s benefits. So, even if you don’t offer time for a craft or activity at the end of storytime (my library typically doesn’t), maybe write up a quick sheet of suggestions for parents and caregivers of some tips and tricks for offering process art time at home!
