Storytime Theme: Winter Solstice

While the winter solstice is still quite a few months away, I know what’s its like to try and plan programming in advance! Today’s storytime theme: winter solstice celebrates the shortest day of the year with really great picture books that make wonderful read alouds, some fun winter-themed songs and rhymes, and of course a few craft projects as well!

The winter solstice has the shortest daylight hours of the year and I always think that the January and February seem so much darker than November and early December, but maybe because it just gets colder it tricks my brain! This would make a great STEM storytime to talk about the seasons changing or make it even more general and just do a winter theme instead.

I love storytime because most people who are planning some sort of storytime program whether that’s at a library, school, childcare center, or even at home do it fairly often, so finding new and different themes can be a challenge. I hope that these books offer you some new choices for your next winter-themed storytime!
