Storytime Theme: Hispanic Heritage Month
Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated annually from September 15 – October 15 to recognize the contributions and influence of Hispanic culture in the United States. We’re celebrating by highlighting Hispanic picture book authors and illustrators, music, rhymes, and crafts. I’m going to throw in a huge caveat to this lesson plan. I really do try my best when highlighting cultures that are not my own and if I’ve made any mistakes, I apologize because that is not my intent.
I’ll be honest, it can be very difficult to find authors and illustrators that identify as Hispanic. So, I do my best by researching their websites, seeing if they’ve won any awards and what types of books they written. I also found it extremely difficult to find age-appropriate crafts and while I know these heavily lean toward Mexican-inspiration, I am aware that Hispanic Heritage Month celebrates all those who speak Spanish from countries around the world.
If you are lucky enough to live in a diverse community, then try reaching out to library patrons who may be able to help with special programming for Hispanic Heritage Month, otherwise, do your due diligence and make sure that what you are presenting is as accurate as possible! (And, obviously, that goes for any culture that you highlight).
