Storytime Theme: Favorites

Today’s post – Storytime Theme: Favorites could have easily been named Storytime Theme: Oldies, but Goodies! When I was doing storytime regularly as a children’s librarian, these titles were some of my tried-and-true, must-have books. They would work every time, no matter the crowd! So today, I thought I’d pull them together into one post and give you a few tips and tricks that I learned along the way.

The most important fact when doing storytime is that if you’re not excited about the books, then it’s going to be a lot harder to get the kids on board. They feed off your energy, and if you’re not 100% in, they know!

Sing along books have never let me down – they are the magic tool in a storyteller’s repertoire. I’ve had some groups of storytime kids that are just absolutely wild and sing along books are the only ones that they’ll truly quiet down to listen. It doesn’t matter how great a singer you are (I’m definitely not a singer), the kids just love the cadence and rhythm of sing along books.

When all else fails, pull out the bubbles and turn on some music. Sometimes storytime will be all about the books and other times you might read one book and fill the rest of your time with great rhymes, songs, and activities – that’s okay too!

And in the end, don’t forget to have fun! That’s the whole point of storytime – to show kids that books, reading, and the library are fun!
