Rick Riordan Read Alikes
Rick Riordan is an ever-popular author in my library! Kids flock to his books and love the characters, settings, and pull of the mythology. One of the things I love most about Riordan’s writing is the inclusivity of his characters from race to disability, to gender identity, he’s not shying away from diversity in more ways than one.
Just in case you’re unfamiliar with Rick Riordan, let’s start with a quick introduction of his work for kids and an overview of what he’s up to now! His first middle grade title – The Lightning Thief introduced readers to Percy Jackson a demigod, the son of a human mother and a Greek God, specifically Poseidon. Percy is also dyslexic and has ADHD, inspired by stories he made up for his son, Haley who also has dyslexia and ADHD. Since his first novel for kids, Riordan has published more than 20 books inspired by mythology.
Riordan is currently working closely with Disney+ creating a new live-action series called Percy Jackson and the Olympians. With filming currently happening, there isn’t a set date when the first season will be aired, but keep an eye out on Disney+ for eight episodes. Check out the trailer too!

Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief

Percy Jackson’s Greek Gods
A publisher in New York asked me to write down what I know about the Greek gods, and I was like, Can we do this anonymously? Because I don’t need the Olympians mad at me again. But if it helps you to know your Greek gods, and survive an encounter with them if they ever show up in your face, then I guess writing all this down will be my good deed for the week.
So begins Percy Jackson’s Greek Gods, in which the son of Poseidon adds his own magic–and sarcastic asides–to the classics. He explains how the world was created, then gives readers his personal take on a who’s who of ancients, from Apollo to Zeus. Percy does not hold back. “If you like horror shows, blood baths, lying, stealing, backstabbing, and cannibalism, then read on, because it definitely was a Golden Age for all that.”
This novel-sized paperback, complete with an insert of full-color illustrations by Caldecott Honoree John Rocco, is portable and friendly, and the ideal way to introduce young readers to the classic stories

Rick Riordan Presents
Here’s where things get interesting. Rick Riordan wrote stories that involved Greek and Roman mythology, Egyptian and Norse mythology and then he did something super cool. He worked with Disney publishing to create an imprint, a smaller scale publishing house with a focus on writing books like the Percy Jackson series, but written by authors from different cultures aand backgrounds about their own mythology and folklore. Honestly, Riordan says it best himself,
“Basically, our goal is to publish great books by middle grade authors from underrepresented cultures and backgrounds, to let them tell their own stories inspired by the mythology and folklore of their own heritage. Over the years, I’ve gotten so many questions from my fans: ‘Will you ever write about Hindu mythology? What about Native American? What about Chinese?’ I saw that there was a lot of interest in reading fantasy adventures based on different world mythologies, but I also knew I wasn’t the best person to write them. Much better, I thought, to use my experience and my platform at Disney to put the spotlight on other great writers who are actually from those cultures and know the mythologies better than I do. Let them tell their own stories, and I’ll do whatever I can to help those books find a wide audience.”
Written in a very similiar style to Riordan, there are currently a dozen different mythologies and folklore series that are being written! I’m sharing them below because I don’t think many readers are aware of these titles. Honestly, every one I’ve read so far has been so great! Lots of action, I’ve learned so much, and the characters are relatable and realistic (well, except for the whole magical realism part of the book!).
