Blogging A to Z: Book Series

If you can get a reluctant reader hooked on the first book in a series, you’re in luck! They might be more inclined to read more about characters they already know or settings they’re familiar with. Plus, they now have a comfort level with an author they already like reading!

And what’s great is that series exist for all ages of readers from picture books to YA. I think where you’ll find the most series is for chapter book readers. These are the books that kids begin reading after they’ve mastered the easy reader. They’re usually around 100ish pages, have a larger font with a lot of white space, and include a lot of supporting illustrations.

This is also the age when a lot of kids may not be reading for fun anymore. They’ve mastered the skills to read, but may not choose to read on their own. Here’s where you can try a book series. It still might take you some time to find the right one, but there are so many great (and very popular) series to choose from!

Book Suggestions

You might be most familiar with The Magic Tree House or Junie B. Jones, but there are so many great stories out there. Try Princess in Black for a pretty-in-pink princess by day and superhero by night. Or Geronimo Stilton about a mouse that goes on amazing adventures. A new favorite at my library is the Owl Diaries about a little owl who learns big lessons and kids always love the Mercy Watson books by Kate DiCamillo!

For the month of April, I’ll be sharing tips for reaching reluctant readers as part of the Blogging A to Z Challenge. There are dozens of reasons why a child might be considered a “reluctant reader.” As summer nears, continued reading practice helps students to keep the reading skills they learned while reading for fun. But, that’s not easy when a child doesn’t want to sit down and read. I’ll be sharing 26 tips to meet reluctant readers where they are. And hopefully find a way to make reading bearable, if not even something they want to do!
