Top Ten Tuesday: Quotes About Libraries

Today’s official theme was “Memorable Things Book Characters Have Said” and while I can quote entire movies, I’m not as great at remembering book character quotes. Most likely because I don’t re-read as many books as I re-watch movies. So, I went rogue today, and instead, I’m going to share quotes about libraries instead.

Each year, my library advisory board has to meet with my Township supervisors and present information about what the library has done in the past year. And although we’ve got through a variety of different formats for the actual presentation and our slides, every year, I end our presentation with an inspirational quote about libraries. My thoughts are that if they don’t remember all the details, numbers, and great stories we share, maybe they’ll at least remember the powerful quote at the end. So without further ado, here are ten quotes about libraries, librarians, and literacy that I love!

quote 1
“A library is infinity under a roof.” – Gail Carson Levine
quote 2
“A trained librarian is a powerful search engine with a heart.” – Sarah McIntyre
quote 3
“Libraries store the energy that fuels the imagination. They open up windows to the world and inspire us to explore and achieve, and contribute to improving our quality of life.” – Sidney Sheldon
quote 4
“The only thing that you absolutely have to know, is the location of the library.” – Albert Einstein
quote 5
“Librarians are almost always very helpful and often almost absurdly knowledgeable. Their skills are probably very underestimated and largely underemployed.” – Charles Medawar
quote 6
“Libraries: The medicine chest of the soul.” – Library at Thebes, inscription over the door
quote 7
“Having fun isn’t hard when you’ve got a library card.” – Marc Brown
quote 8
“A library is not a luxury but one of the necessities of life.” – Henry Ward Beecher
quote 9
“Libraries allow children to ask questions about the world and find the answers. And the wonderful thing is that once a child learns to use a library, the doors to learning are always open.” – Laura Bush
quote 10
“Literacy is the most basic currency of the knowledge economy.” – Barack Obama
