Top Ten Tuesday: Favorite Places to Read

This is an awesome topic this week! I’m not a picky reader in terms of place. I grew up in a busy household with three siblings, pets, and lots of activities going on. That being said, I learned very quickly to read almost anywhere no matter how loud it is around me. I can also (usually) dive into a few paragraphs wherever I find myself.

But, speaking of my favorite places to read is a whole other story. There are a few places that I love the most for digging into a great book.

  1. Anywhere near water
Water, for me, is always relaxing, calming often making me feel like the tiniest part of the world, while at the same time making me feel powerful and strong! My parents have a lake on their property and it’s absolute perfection.
  2. In bed
This is probably where I do most of my reading. I try to spend 15-20 minutes every night reading with low lighting and snuggly covers.
  3. Swinging in a hammock
I love hammocks, that swinging is so relaxing. Keep the bugs away (and make sure I’m in the shade) and this is a perfect reading location.
  4. On public transportation
I’m lucky enough to be able to read on public transportation and I can get a lot of reading done when on a plane, train, bus, or subway. I don’t travel by public transportation very often anymore, but when I was interning in grad school I had a 30-minute commute on the metro and it was such a great time to read.
  5. Comfy chair in my front window
I’ve got the comfiest Ikea chair that sits in my front window. It’s a massive window that brings in beautiful light and the perfect place to read at any point of the day or night.
  6. At breakfast
There are some days when I just can’t help but read while eating breakfast. There’s always a risk of making a mess, but it’s usually worth it!
  7. When eating alone
Once in a while I find myself traveling (typically for work) where I’m by myself at mealtime. This is kind of a fun place to read. There’s enough white noise happening around you and as long as isn’t insanely busy, the wait staff will usually leave you alone to relax and enjoy your meal.
  8. Screened-in porches
This is the perfect “outdoor” space because the bugs can’t bother you, but you get to hear nature sounds, feel the breeze, and still be in the shade. My skin is so pale, that being in the shade is super helpful to me so that I don’t have to be as worried about getting sunburned.
  9. Home office
My home office is super cozy at the top of our house. We live in a split level, so our top floor has sloped ceiling a really cozy feel. Plus, we’ve added floor to ceiling shelves full of books with a cozy chair and blanket that’s perfect for reading.
  10. Waiting for appointments
Okay, this isn’t necessarily a favorite place to read, but I’m always surprised at how much reading I get done while in a waiting room for an appointment. Otherwise, I’d be mindlessly scrolling through social media, instead I can get a chapter or two of reading done during the same time period!
