9 Books to Celebrate Eid Al-Fitr

From sundown yesterday to sundown this evening, Muslims around the world are celebrating Eid Al-Fitr. This festival celebrates the end of fasting during the month of Ramadan. I didn’t have a lot of luck finding many books about this holiday, but I found a few I wanted to share. Many of the books that have been published are actually explaining what Eid is and how it is celebrated. I found even fewer books that weave Eid into the story of a family like in More to the Story. Both types of books are great, but I’m always looking for books that share cultures, religions, and traditions that I’m not as familiar with as part of a story.

I also tried to focus on sharing books with own voices authors. Most of the titles on this list are by Mulsim authors and or illustrators.. There are a few titles on this list that are most likely not written by Muslim authors, but that were reviewed and or shared by Muslim readers. The blog, Hijabi Librarians, is a wonderful resource for reviews and book lists by Muslim creators.

I think the book I’m most excited about on this list is Once Upon an Eid, it’s a short story collection by 15 Muslim writers that was published just last year. I don’t always love short stories because I end up wanting to know more about these characters. But, what I do love is that as a reader, I can experience 15 different authors is a very short time and then find more by authors I enjoyed. Short story collections are also really great for reluctant readers because it’s far less daunting to read a 20 page story than a 200+ page novel.

Also, before I forget, I want to share a brand new book that is absolutely gorgeous – In My Mosque by M. O. Yuksel and illutsrated by Hatem Aly. This book was just published on March 23 of this year and is beautiful! The illustrations show so much diversity and the descriptions of what happens and who visits mosques is a wonderful introduction for young readers. This is one you’ll definitely want to check out!
