I Sang You Down From the Stars

Synopsis:

I Sang You Down From the Stars

“This unique baby book sings with Native cultural detail, while striking a universal chord in its celebration of the blossoming of love that comes with expecting and welcoming a new baby–with art by New York Times bestselling illustrator and Caldecott Medalist Michaela Goade.

As she waits for the arrival of her new baby, a mother-to-be gathers gifts to create a sacred bundle. A white feather, cedar and sage, a stone from the river . . .

Each addition to the bundle will offer the new baby strength and connection to tradition, family, and community. As they grow together, mother and baby will each have gifts to offer each other.

Tasha Spillett-Sumner and Michaela Goade, two Indigenous creators, bring beautiful words and luminous art together in a resonant celebration of the bond between mother and child.”

Review:

A stunning book perfect for a baby shower or new mom! Although this story focuses on the expectation of a new baby in the Inniniwak tradition, the feelings of joy and celebration are universal. The poetic pairs beautifully with soft, star-filled illustrations that connect each spread together with a swoosh. I loved that when the baby arrives, each swoosh is filled with the history of the babys’ family and culture. The illustrations show what a small part of the wider world this baby is and at the same time, it’s time to celebrate a new member of a family. There is a note from both the author and illustrator in the back matter which was so interesting to learn more about the traditions of the Inniniwak Nation and how the illustrator was able to share those traditions through art.

I cannot do this book justice in describing to you the expectation and celebration of a new baby. This is definitely a perfect choice for an expectant mother. It is beautiful through and through.
