Slice of Life Day 23: Beyond the Books

I love to read! As a librarian it works out really well – I get to be surrounded by books all day long (even if I don’t read as many as I’d like)! I’ve been a reader ever since I can remember, I loved going to the local library growing up and it was torture to only being able to pick out five books. It was a small library, so there was a limit on check-outs. Any time my parents shooed us outside to play, you better believe that involved me taking my book with me. I had a book with me everywhere and spent a lot of free time at school in the library picking up a new book.

Genres & Formats

Food Network Magazine

But, what I was thinking about today is that it’s not only books that I love to read. I enjoy reading newspaper articles, blogs, cereal boxes, shampoo bottles, pretty much everything! I just got the latest issue of the Food Network magazine in the mail and cannot wait to open it and check out all the great recipes and articles. I’m intrigued by the Sheet Pan Easter dinner which sounds like a perfect option for this year!

Reading Choice

So, when someone says they’re not a reader, maybe they don’t read your typical best-selling fiction. Maybe they read the newspaper every day, or magazines, or like my partner, pretty much anything that interests him online. Reading takes many forms and as a librarian, I like to remind families that all reading “counts.” Graphic novels, audiobooks, wordless picture books, novels in verse, poetry, fiction, nonfiction, magazines – all this involves reading both text and illustrations. So let your kids experience all sorts of reading to find their favorite! Because reading needs to be fun in order for kids to want to do it more.

slice of life

This is my third year participating in the Slice of Life Challenge. I’ll be sharing brief posts that show a glimpse of my life in story-format. I hope you enjoy just a slice of my life as a librarian, book lover, and blogger!
