Synopsis:

Dragon Mountain

“From the authors behind the critically acclaimed Sam Wu books, a thrilling new fantasy series about friendship, courage, adventure, and dragon magic.

When 12-year-old Billy Chan finds out his parents are sending him to a language and culture camp in the middle-of-nowhere China, he can’t imagine anything worse. He’s not expecting to become friends with fellow campers Dylan O’Donnell, Charlotte Bell, and Liu Ling-Fei. And he’s definitely not planning to meet any dragons. But when the four kids accidentally open a crack in an ancient mountain, they become involved in an ages-old struggle of good versus evil. Now it’s up to them to save the Dragon Realm—if they don’t, the world as they know it might disappear forever.”

Review:

Kids looking for a fantasy, adventure novel definitely need to check out Dragon Mountain. Billy doesn’t expect language camp to be the most insane summer experience of his life. But, when he and three other kids stumble onto a tiger in the mountains outside of camp, they know something is amiss. Soon, the tiger is the least of their problems as they slip through an entrance to a cave in the middle of the mountain and meet dragons who have been waiting for many years for the right humans to come along and help them save the Dragon Realm. And now, they’re ready to fight. But are Billy and his friends?

Although the set-up is quite typical – four kids who couldn’t be more different team up to save the world. I loved the setting and especially how the dragons reflected the kids they paired up with so well. Under 250-pages, this story doesn’t waste any time getting to the action and sometimes feels just a little rushed in places. I’d love to have spent a little more time learning about the characters. But, revealing the kids’ strengths as we meet the dragons worked out really well in pairing them together. I will admit, a dragon bond sounds pretty awesome!

Verdict:

Fantasy-loving kids are going to enjoy Dragon Mountain. And I’m excited to see what they do with the next novel as they left us on quite the cliffhanger at the end of this one. But, hey, no spoilers here!
