It’s Monday! What Are You Reading? 4/27/2020

Last Week

It was a rough week, work-wise and I think because of that, I threw myself into as many books as I could. I actually read a ton this week and definitely feel as though I’m in a better place because of it.

I’ve said before, reading for me is essential. It’s not an “Oh, if get to read a few chapters, I’ll be good.” It’s much more like, “If I’m not reading enough, I can actually feel the difference.” So, I spent some specific time this week making sure I got a chance to read.

I added a little reading time to my morning routine and also made sure I went to bed early enough to at least get a chapter or two in before I fell asleep with the book hitting me in the face.

This week, I read:

  • Brightstorm by Vashti Hardy
I know I had reservations as it was a fantasy (not my typical genre), but I really, really liked this book! I loved the characters and really enjoyed the plot as well! Even with a map to start the story off, I was immediately drawn into the story and loved every bit of it!
  • When You Know What I Know by Sonja K. Solter
This was such a difficult book to read as it deals with sexual abuse, but also an important story for all kids, especially girls. Told in verse, it was a powerful story or a girl losing herself after she’s molested by her uncle and then slowly finding her way and her strength.
  • The Only Black Girls In Town by Brandy Colbert
I liked this story of friendship, growing up, racism, and microaggressions told with a diverse cast of characters in a small town on the beach. Books like this help white people like me better understand what if feels like to be judged by the color of your skin and to feel like you don’t fit in.
  • Tigers, Not Daughters by Samantha Mabry
Samantha Mabry’s writing always holds feels like there’s just a little piece that you aren’t going to “get” in the best way possible. This was a powerful story of family, of grief, and of strength. It pulled me and I so wanted to know what happened with these sisters.
  • The Friend Zone by Abby Jimenez
I grabbed this on a whim from the library when I stopped in to check the mail and pay the bills. I loved this story as it felt like it was a little bit more than most romance novels with a twist that I saw coming but definitely ended differently than I expected. I actually finished this in a day and was exactly what I needed over the weekend.
  • Ayesha at Last by Uzma Jalaluddin
I’m not quite halfway through this novel and I first picked it up for its gorgeous cover of gold with a girl in a rich, purple hijab on the cover. Then when I heard it described as a modern-day Pride and Prejudice, I knew I had to read it! I can’t wait to keep reading!

Reading List for Week of 4/27/2020

This week, I’m going to try and catch up with the rest of my March ARCs that I have sitting on my shelf, that way I might only be about a month behind in my reading!

Here’s what’s up next:

  • The Queen Bee and Me by Gllian McDunn
  • How to Make Friends with the Sea by Tanya Guerrero
  • The Big Break by Mark Tatulli
  • Wink by Rob Harrell
