Slice of Life Day 23: Connecting

It’s hard to write about things other than COVID-19 as it’s affecting people everywhere and really challenging people in everyday life. But, in the midst of all the stressful craziness, I am trying to find the positives. And this past week, I’ve definitely talked with more friends and family that I would in a normal week.

Family

My sister and I talk on the phone at least once a week usually and my mom and I are on the phone a few times a week as well. But, I also touched base with both my brothers who I rarely speak with if we’re not physically seeing each other at my parents’ house or for a holiday.

And then I touched base with my Grandma who is extremely stubborn. She’s in her eighties and lives in my grandparents’ house alone, so I worry that she’s not taking enough precautions. Or letting my aunts and uncles help out by going to get groceries. This means I tried to explain the severity of something like this to her and she informed me that she’d be fine (after telling me all the errands she ran last Saturday!). I then touched base with the cousins to see how everyone was doing and to check in with Grandma sometime to see what she’s up to.

Friends

My partner and his friends video called each other this afternoon. These guys have been friends since elementary and middle school. And they are currently from three different states and two different countries. It was great to see everyone and joke around a little bit.

A couple of girlfriends and I have a group chat that we use to touch base with each other. We had planned on a girls’ night this week that we had to cancel, unfortunately. But, we did jump on our text messages to check in about families, grocery stores with supplies, and how life with a toddler while trying to social distance was working out.

And then I got a chance to text with friends around the country. We all wanted to make sure everyone is safe and doing alright under the circumstances. As I said, I’d probably talk and or see a few of these people in the course of a week. But this past week during a global pandemic has actually brought us closer together. That’s at least one positive to come out of all this. And I’m choosing to be thankful for that today!

This is my second year participating in the Slice of Life Challenge. I’ll be posting brief posts that show a glimpse of my life in story-format. A slice of my life as a librarian and blogger that I hope you enjoy!

If there is any good that will come out of the pandemic, it is this. People connecting more with family and friends, checking in on them, and making sure that everyone is OK.

I’m thankful for a Google Hang Out we just finished with a group of friends. We normally get together once a week and due to spring break travel and now social distancing we haven’t gathered for a few weeks. It was good to connect. Staying connected with family and friends is important through this.
