Storytime Theme: Hibernation

With classic favorites like Bear Snores On by Karma Wilson and nonfiction titles like Why Do Bears Sleep All Winter? by Mary Englar, this storytime theme: hibernation is an easy one to create! You can incorporate as much weather-related science as you want to create a STEM storytime, or shift your focus and include a few more teddy bear ideas for a simple teddy bear theme as well!

That’s what I love about storytime – you can take whatever parts work for you and make the adjustments you need to work with your families!

Songs

  • Grizzly Bears – Jbrary
To the tune of Mary Had a Little Lamb
  • Bear Is Sleeping – Jbrary
To the same tune as See the Little Bunnies Sleeping, which my storytime kids absolutely love!
  • Rock a Bye Your Bear – The Wiggles
This is an adorable song that can be used with some simple hand motions!

Activities

  • Hibernation Pre-Writing Cards – Pocket of Preschool
These are great printouts to use to help kids learn pre-writing skills (i.e. following different types of lines).
  • Blanket Fort (or Bear Cave) – Kids’ Activity Blog
Blanket forts are probably some of the most fun things to create and hang out in!
  • Act out “Going on a Bear Hunt” – Preschool Plan It
A classic song that begs to be acted out – outside or in!
