10 MG Sci-Fi Books with Female Protagonists

It’s National Science Fiction Day! Although an unofficial holiday, many sci-fi fans celebrate National Science Fiction Day on Isaac Asimov’s birthday, January 2nd. “I write for the same reason I breathe – because if I didn’t, I would die.” Nothing could be truer, Isaac Asimov was a well-known science fiction author and professor of biochemistry whose prolific works can be found in 9 out of the 10 Dewey Decimal classifications. (Wikipedia) Fun fact! Besides sharing a little about Isaac Asimov’s interesting life, today I’ll be sharing 10 MG Sci-Fi Books with Female Protagonists.

National Science Fiction Day!

Asimov lived for a brief time in Philadelphia (my backyard) but spent most of his life in Brooklyn. Sadly in 1983, during triple bypass surgery, he contracted HIV from a blood transfusion which led to his death a few years later in 1992. At the time, doctors convinced Asimov and his family to keep his HIV a secret due to the public’s prejudice.

Now, after that mini-history and biography lesson, I want to share 10 middle grade science fiction with female protagonists. I wasn’t originally planning to share only female protagonists, but as I created this list, I thought it would be a fun focus! This list includes some classic titles as well as more recently published books as well. There’s even a number of graphic novels on the list which is a format that always lends itself to rich backdrops and settings.
