Pyrography – a cool new hobby with an even cooler name

If the whole library thing doesn’t work out, I think I’ve found an alternative – pyrography, a cool new hobby with an even cooler name Over the weekend, while at my parents’ house, my friends and I tried our hand at wood burning or pyrography. You might be familiar with the idea after seeing it done on wooden spoons or cutting boards in the kitchen. It’s also common to see decor for your home. And you’ll see other artwork online as well.

I didn’t have too many ideas, so when a friend said, draw a hippo, I obviously accepted the challenge. These three designs are all done free form after looking at some different images online. And because I can’t help myself, check out these great picture books about jungle animals.

The tool is plugged into an outlet and you select different points which will give you different textures and ways to draw. You can find an inexpensive tool from Home Depot or Michael’s Craft store. You can buy even more points and more expensive kits, but to try something new, we started with a less expensive option. And we bought a bunch of bamboo wooden spoons online to use for our crafting.

I’m not an extremely creative person, but I’m pretty good at copying an image from a picture. And I love trying new hobbies and projects. Overall, I really enjoyed working with this tool and would love to explore how other points work and how to shade around images as well. It’s amazing what some people can do with a piece of wood and a tool like this. My mom gave me all the leftover spoons, which means I get to play around a little more. And you might be seeing a few more of these pop up on my blog this fall. Plus, having a tool like this would make giving gifts a little easier this year – personalized and practical!
