Piranhas Don’t Eat Bananas

Synopsis:

Piranhas Don't Eat Bananas

“Everyone knows that piranhas don’t eat bananas — except for Brian. This little fish loves to munch not only on bananas, but on fruit of all kinds! Brian’s piranha friends think he’s crazy. Piranhas don’t eat bananas — their sharp teeth are for eating meat! And there’s a scrumptious pair of feet dangling in the water nearby…

Rich with author-illustrator Aaron Blabey’s hysterical text and unforgettably wacky illustrations, Piranhas Don’t Eat Bananas is a hilarious story about trying new things — no matter how strange they seem!”

Review:

I love wacky books with silly illustrations and even funnier storylines and this piranha book hit the mark. With rhyming words, fruit and body parts kids won’t be able to stop giggling at the piranha that likes to eat a little healthier than most. (And thanks to Finding Nemo a lot of kids have at least heard the word piranha). You can’t help but smile when you see the little green piranhas, with their big eyes and underbites! This would pair really well with I Ain’t Gonna Paint No More by Karen Beaumont for a rhyming storytime on body parts or Go, Go, Grapes! by April Pulley Sayre for a focus on eating fruit!

My one caveat is that this book was originally published in Australia, so you have to pronounce the word banana with an Australian accent to get it to rhyme with piranha. It’s the only rhyme in the whole story that tripped me up a little. Definitely practice it a little before reading it aloud to a group!
