A Little Chicken

A Little Chicken

Synopsis: “Dot is scared of lots of things: wolves, bears, the occasional lawn ornament. But when one of her mother’s eggs rolls out of the nest, this nervous chick must find the courage to save the day—and her new sibling! So she bravely ventures down the steep hill, into the deep pond, and into the dark woods. Perfect for any kid who needs a little encouragement to face the challenging world, this story proves that sometimes a big hero is just a little chicken.”

Review: The story of a little chicken who is a little scared of a lot of things is a great way to introduce kids to trying something new, even if they’re afraid. I really liked this story and the simple text – it’s perfect for toddlers and with a repetitive refrain, “Cluck-Cluck. No luck”, kids will be happy to “read” along with adults. I also love the adventure of the egg as it rolls out of the coop and little Dot chases along behind it. It’s filled with onomatopoeia which are some of my favorite read alouds.

The illustrations are sweet and I personally don’t blame Dot for being afraid of the occasional lawn ornament – they always look like they’re watching you! Otherwise, all the animals are absolutely adorable with big eyes and cute smiles. Overall, this is sweet story, perfect for kids who may be hesitant to try new things (as long as you teach kids that being a “little chicken” is the same meaning as being scared.)
