Slice of Life Day 15: Retreat

When I think of the word retreat, I think of a calm, spa/resort with fancy cocktails and lounging by the pool. I don’t necessarily think of work. But, that’s where I spent most of my day today… at a work retreat. And in all honesty, it went really well.

I’m part of a Board for the better part of two years now, trying to update the vision of the organization. So after spending a good deal of time going back and forth, kind of knowing what we want, but unsure of how to get there. We decided to invest in a facilitator to lead us through some exercises in a new location.

You never know how a facilitator will work with your group, if your group will be open to really working on some issues, and what will happen. But, I think this helped us immensely as we were extremely productive, we have concrete steps to move us forward, and, for the most part, all have a very similar idea of where and what we want to be in the future.

It doesn’t ever seem like the facilitator does a lot in these instances, but he was vital in pushing up forward and really leading us through each example and getting us thinking outside the box. We did a lot of partner, small group, and team exercises that made our four hour retreat worth it.

I’m excited to move forward and I really hope we don’t lose the momentum that was created at this workshop. Now, it’s off to make a cocktail, since that wasn’t part of my retreat today!

The Slice of Life Challenge is something new I’m trying this month! I’ll be posting brief posts that show a glimpse of my life in story-format. A slice of my life as a librarian and blogger that I hope you enjoy!

“…he was vital in pushing up forward and really leading us through each example and getting us thinking outside the box.” This really speaks to me. I agree that it can be so hard to find someone in that role who can help a group, but this is exactly what helps a group. Sounds like this work retreat was worth it!

Sounds like the fruits of this retreat, paradoxically, will help your organization advance. Happy to hear, too, that the end of the day provided an opportunity to retreat from the more intense demands of earlier.
