It’s Monday! What Are You Reading? 1/28/19

Last Week

I had every intention to read four titles this week. Did I? Nope! I did read Sweep: The Story of a Girl and Her Monster by Jonathan Auxier and The Secret of Dinswood by Ellen Alexander, but didn’t get to the other titles. There were nights I was so tired, I fell asleep on the couch before heading up to bed only to fall asleep as soon as my head hit the pillow.

I really enjoyed Sweep, it was the perfect mix between historical fiction and magical realism. A story of great friendship amidst hardship and overcoming the odds. Check out my review from this weekend.

I then read the ARC of The Secret of Dinswood by Ellen Alexander and while I really enjoyed the mystery/treasure hunt premise, the writing wasn’t as great as I had hoped. I felt like the author tried to over-explain and over-describe scenes which made the novel much longer than I felt it needed to be. Plus, the writing style felt a little old-fashioned as well and gave me pause a few time when she described the difference between the male and female characters. This may not bother kids to0 much, but it almost made me stop reading the book. The plot kept me intrigued enough to stick with it and I’m glad I did, I enjoyed it.

Reading List for Week of 1/28/19

I’ve got two more books to read that are sitting on my bookshelf and Kindle just waiting for me. Plus, I’ll be frantically putting on hold award-winning titles from the ALA Youth Media Awards as they are announced this morning!

  • Inkling by Kenneth Oppel
  • The Storm Keeper’s Island by Catherine Doyle
