#blogbookaday: Interrupting Chicken and the Elephant of Surprise

Cover of Interrupting Chicken and the Elephant of SurpriseSummary:  “It’s homework time for the little red chicken, who has just learned about something every good story should have: an elephant of surprise. Or could it be an element of surprise (as her amused papa explains)? As they dive into story after story, looking for the part that makes a reader say “Whoa! I didn’t know that was going to happen,” Papa is sure he can convince Chicken he’s right. After all, there are definitely no elephants in “The Ugly Duckling,” “Rapunzel,” or “The Little Mermaid” — or are there? Elephant or element, something unexpected awaits Papa in every story, but a surprise may be in store for the little red chicken as well. Full of the same boisterous charm that made Interrupting Chicken so beloved by readers, this gleeful follow-up is sure to delight fans of stories, surprises, and elephants alike.” (Taken from Goodreads)

Review: The adorable chick from Interrupting Chickens is back and excited to tell her papa about what she learned at school – the Elephant of Surprise. Although her Papa tries to explain it’s the element of surprise, the little chick is sure she’ll find an elephant in each story they read together!

Personal Reaction: I love the over-zealous chick in this story who is so sure she’ll find an elephant in stories like The Ugly Duckling and The Little Mermaid. David Ezra Stein does an amazing job of keeping the pages turning while at the same time giving kids the chance to watch the scene unfold as the little chick bounces all over the house! This new title can be read as a stand-alone, but if the reader is familiar with the little chick’s antics from the first book, I think it adds a little to this new title!

#blogbookadayThis is a new idea I’m trying on my blog this year that was inspired by @donalynbooks and @heisereads – to provide a brief review of a picture book every day of 2018. You’ll get a brief summary of the story, a review of the content, illustrations and theme, my personal reaction to the book and all the pertinent publication information! Enjoy!
