It’s Monday! What Are You Reading? 10/1/18

What happened to September? I swear it was just Labor Day weekend and now we’re looking at October already! AHHHHHHHH!!!!! I did get the chance to read Blood Water Paint by Joy McCullough and it was perfectly fitting to read the week of the Kavanaugh hearing. The story is historical fiction based on Artemisia Gentileschi’s life. She was a painter at a time when women weren’t allowed to be painters. And regardless of how well she paints, no one knows her name and what’s worse, she is raped by the man who is supposed to be her tutor. Written in verse and told in story this is a powerful story of telling your truth even when the world may not believe or do anything to help you. Extremely powerful story and one that is so relevant still today.

I’m going to start trying to get to middle grade titles that I haven’t read yet that are being discussed on mock Newbery blogs. So I’ve got to get my hands on:

  • The Book of Boy by Catherine Gilbert Murdock
  • Ghost Boys by Jewell Parker Rhodes
  • Hope in the Holler by Lisa Lewis Tyre
  • Rebound by Kwame Alexander
  • The Season of Styx Malone by Kekla Magoon
  • Harbor Me by Jacqueline Woodson
  • Hurricane Child by Kheryn Callender
