#blogbookaday: Hello, My Name Is…: How Adorabilis Got His Name

Hello, My Name Is.jpg

Summary:  “Inspired by a true event! In the summer of 2015, an adorable new species of octopus was discovered on the ocean floor–this picture book story imagines how this cute creature got his name.

Deep down in the water lives an octopus small enough to fit in the palm of your hand. But he doesn’t have a name! Anglerfish is named for his hook like an angler, Mimic Octopus for her ability to change shape and color, and Giant Squid is GIANT! But this little guy doesn’t have the same abilities as the other creatures. What could his name be? With Marisa Polansky’s sweet text and Joey Chou’s dynamic illustrations, Hello, My Name Is… imagines how the cutest creature in the sea got his name. The story includes a note from a scientist about the naming process and more information about Adorabilis.” (Taken from Goodreads)

Review: An adorable little octopus moves into a new neighborhood and has trouble introducing himself because he doesn’t have a cool name like all the other sea creatures. A quick introduction of marine life, this book is brightly colored and, of course, absolutely adorable!

Personal Reaction: I loved this sweet little story about a really cute octopus! I also think kids would really enjoy learning the names of some other sea creatures and why they’re named that way – like the Anglerfish, Fangtooth, and Yeti Crab. This would make for the perfect read aloud for a water-themed STEM program or an art project to create a new creature and give it the perfect name!

This is a new idea I’m trying on my blog this year that was inspired by @donalynbooks and @heisereads – to provide a brief review of a picture book every day of 2018. You’ll get a brief summary of the story, a review of the content, illustrations and theme, my personal reaction to the book and all the pertinent publication information! Enjoy!
