Apps in the Library

mza_5526287369228656452I’ve been wrestling with this idea for awhile now, apps in the library, but I’ve finally figured out my personal viewpoint on them.  For a long time it was advised to keep young children (under the age of 2) from screens, but in today’s screen-needy world, that’s almost impossible.  And although I think it’s more important for parents and caregivers to interact with their children one-on-one and to read to them, but apps are beginning to have their place in society.

Some apps, such as Skype can allow families to stay connected even when they are spread across the globe.  This would have been wonderful for my family growing up – all of our extended family lived 6 – 10+ hours away.  Some apps, can reinforce teaching letters, shapes, numbers, colors, animals, etc.

I think the important thing for parents to remember is that time spent on electronics or “screen time” should be limited and should continue to engage both the parents and children.  Using apps can again, reinforce, what parents are already teaching and parents can interact with children to create a more educational opportunity while using apps.

I’ve done a lot of research trying to find “the best” apps for toddlers and preschoolers, but it’s difficult there are many smaller awards given by companies or parenting magazines, but it’s difficult to find an overreaching award that picks the very best.

I’ve created a pamphlet with 25 apps that I saw on a number of top lists that were also reasonably priced – all are under $4.99.  My next goal is to find a more comprehensive list of FREE apps for kids as well.  I feel that even though this may not be the primary focus of the library, we should be able to provide parents with information to make the best choice for their families.

I’m planning a Saturday morning story time in just a few weeks where I plan on borrowing an In the Jungle theme I found on another blog I follow.  With her very helpful story time plan, I’m going to try using the Felt Board app for the first time in story time – wish me luck!
