The Cat in the Hat Read Alikes
The Cat in the Hat is a classic for a reason. Dr. Seuss was able to take a very controlled vocabulary and make it fun to read for kids! The book itself only contains 236 different words, all of which were words kids at the time were expected to know as sight words. And with primers like Dick and Jane being used most frequently to teach kids to read, Dr. Seuss was given the challenge of creating something that wasn’t just a helpful assignment, but something kids would enjoy as well.
Well-written easy readers are not so easy to find. And kids who are learning to read are on the precipice. Give them books that are too difficult and they will swear off reading forever (or at least quite a long time), or give them books that make them feel empowered and smart and they’ll continue reading long into their lives. And while there are many children’s books available on the market that claim to be for beginning readers, they are not all made equally.
Today’s list is inspired by the classic The Cat in the Hat but is also being written because the new movie is coming out tomorrow. It should be a fun, entertaining romp (and I’ll bet there are more than 236 words throughout), but if you’re looking for more practice with reading skills, check out this list below.
Some of these are other Dr. Seuss classics, while others have been award the Theodore Seuss Geisel award or honor for the most distinguished book for beginning readers. This is a great option for families looking toward reading practice with high quality books, that are also fun to read together. The award itself is named for Dr. Seuss, after his legacy for creating books for this subsection of readers.
