Storytime Theme: Crocs & Gators
This is a fun storytime to put together and while I don’t necessarily know all the differences between crocodiles and alligators, sharing a book that compares the two, like the Nat Geo Kids book Alligators & Crocodiles, is a great way to learn and share some facts! As I’m always mentioning, there are a ton of great picture book nonfiction titles out there – take advantage of them for storytime. Even if you don’t read the whole book cover-to-cover, talk to caregivers about why not and why it’s okay!
I think a lot of parents believe that reading with kdis needs to look a certain way and as a librarian or teacher, you have the opportunity to show how reading can look in a variety of ways, reading excerpts, reading the large text for the story and ignoring the nonfiction text this time, going straight to an index to find the part of the book you need. None of this is wrong, but parents almost need to be given the permission to make reading work for their family. Storytime can help you achieve that!
