2026 Summer Reading 9th – 12th Grade Guide
Summer is the best time of year to read for fun, you don’t have the pressure of school and even with sports or a summer job, I bet there’s a little more flexibility in your schedule to read for fun! For some teens, reading for fun is a foreign concept, probably because you’ve never found the books that speak to you and make you want to read them! But, have no fear because if you want to give it a shot, summer is the best time to do so.
Finding the Right Book
I’ve curated a list of 25 titles that have been published over the last few years that I think will grab your attention. I tried to pull books of interest from a lot of different formats and genres to reach as many different readers as possible. If you haven’t read anything for fun in a while and a full novel seems daunting, start with the “Different Formats” section that includes books written in verse (like poetry), written in the form of letters or diary entries, graphic novels, and more. There is no right answer when it comes to finding a book that speaks to you, sometimes it’s trial and error to find the right one.
Don’t forget to check with your local public library, you can save money and borrow books for free both in physical form as well as downloading digital titles as well! And don’t forget, you can also listen to audiobooks too! I find audiobooks are great when you’re doing something that doesn’t require too much thought like yardwork or cleaning up the house. You don’t need to focus on the physical work, you can focus on the story instead (and it makes tasks go much faster!).
If you haven’t had a chance to review the PreK Guide, the Kindergarten – 2nd Grade Guide, the 3rd – 5th Grade Guide, or the 6th – 8th Grade Guide you should definitely check out those curated book lists too! And remember, kids and teens don’t have to read from a specific list because they’re in a specific grade, kids should be encouraged to read whatever they want and if they’re enjoying themselves, then that’s the most important part! I hope you have a wonderful summer filled with great books!
