Storytime Theme: Winter Animals

It’s been ten years(!) since I last posted a Winter Animals storytime lesson plan. I wanted to create an updated book list, add some new songs, and a couple of crafts for a refresh. This would be a great storytime to incorporate some nonfiction text into storytime in a really easy way. Remember, there’s no rule that says you have to read an entire book cover-to-cover in storytime. Pick a page or two that’s interesting or specific to your storytime theme and share them with your group.

I think by doing so, parents and caregivers get a better idea of how to incorporate different types of books into their own reading at home. You can also model similar behavior with kids’ magazines as well! As an aside, I found a lot of winter animal themed books that were translations from other languages which I found really interesting. Translated picture books may not be the best choices for storytime as they are often longer stories, but I think this can be another opportunity for teaching parents and caregivers about the different types of books out there!
