New Halloween Picture Books
Aggie and the Ghost by Matthew Forsythe
Aggie is very excited to live on her own—until she finds out her new house is haunted. But no fear, the situation is nothing that can’t be fixed with a carefully considered list of rules: No haunting after dark. No stealing socks. No eating all the food.
But the ghost doesn’t like playing by the rules and challenges Aggie to an epic game of tic-tac-toe—winner gets the house.
The Big Monster Bake by Fiona Barker, illustrated by Eve O’Brien
Come on down to MonsterStreet this howlingHallowe’en.
The houses look spooktacular, a truly splendid scene.
We’ve been busy cooking and we’ve made a monster bake.
I wonder, would our neighbors like a slice of tasty cake?
Two shy monsters want to share their cake but they haven’t met all of their neighbours before! This Halloween, they bravely knock on each door and discover all sorts of friends! From ghosts to pumpkins, skeletons to bats, the families on Monster Street come in all shapes and sizes and share their different Halloween treats with the little monsters. The story ends with a street party where everyone joins together in celebration.
Bob the Vampire Snail by Andrea Zuill
Did you know all snails are named Bob? It’s a fact! And this is the story of one of those Bobs and the night his life changed forever. First, he heard a SCREAM… then a C-R-A-C-K… and then he felt a drip, drip, drip… and then, poof! He was a vampire snail.
Fangs? Check. No reflection? Check. Wings? You bet. And so Bob, now very different from all the other Bobs, sets out to live life as a vampire snail, discovering his knack for sleeping upside down and his taste for tomatoes. He’s alone in his vampire-ness, until one day Bob meets someone very similar….
Chicka Chicka Tricka Treat by Julien Chung
A told B,
and B told C,
“Let’s sneak to the top
of the creaky old tree.”
The classic alphabet chant gets a Halloween twist as the letters sneak their way up the tree, all donning their spiffiest costumes. But when a witch swoops in, and the letters come tumbling down, will that be the end of their Halloween fun…or just the beginning?
Creepy Sheepy by Lucy Ruth Cummins, illustrated by Pete Oswald
It’s Halloween, which means Sleepy Sheepy needs to find the perfect costume for trick-or-treating! And Sheepy MUST be the scariest, hairiest, werewolf of all!
But on Halloween night, the costume just doesn’t fit right, and when Sheepy steps outside, there are packs of werewolves everywhere! How will he stand out and be the creepiest sheepy of all?
Little Boo by Maddie Frost
When the antics of their little sibling start to get to Big Boo, they decide to trade for a friend’s younger sibling, Little Howl. At first this seems like a great idea, but soon enough Big Boo finds that the grass isn’t always greener and Little Howl is a whole new level of monster. This sweet and humorous story about sibling relationships acknowledges the frustrations but, ultimately, the love that comes with a new addition to the family.
The Mystery of the Blue Train by Marci Kay Monson, illustrated by Greg Paprocki
The Mystery of the Blue Train is one of Agatha Christie’s early detective novels (a cozy mystery―no violence or gore), and where she continues to use the fictional detective Hercule Poirot as a major character. The story, set on a train bound for the French Riviera, is a true who-done-it full of mysterious characters, missing jewels, and teasing clues. Monson’s retelling of the original book captures the plot and distills it in a way that is fun for children, gently ushering them into the literary world of Christie’s mysteries. Along with the story, there are activities, games, and puzzles throughout to help with children’s engagement, and might just foster a few budding detectives.
Scary Shark: A Jaw-some Halloween by Mike Lowery
Edgar the Shark and his best friend Lotta team up once more in this hilarious Halloween tale! It’s Halloween night, and Edgar the Shark is frightened of all the scary creatures floating just outside his window. Luckily, his best friend Lotta is there to show him Halloween is just a day to pretend to be scary. Together they carve jack- o-lanternfish, hang magni-fish-ent decorations, and choose the pretend-scariest costumes they can think of! But will that be enough to help Edgar prove he’s not a scaredy-catfish?
Stop That Witch! by Alastair Heim, illustrated by Migy Blanco
It’s Halloween, and Dog Detective Cluehound and Sergeant Squirrel are enjoying their candy after a night of trick-or-treating. But when they turn their backs for a moment, a cackling someone swoops in and steals their bucket of treats!
Thus begins a chase to apprehend the thief. Wherever they look, the witch is one step ahead until—POOF—she disappears. Is Halloween ruined for poor Detective Cluehound?
But wait–there appears to be a surprise waiting for the hapless detective in his office….
We Are Already Haunting Here! by Gideon Sterer and Charlie Mylie
A little ghost sets out into the world to find a place of his own to haunt, but it’s not so easy! Every place he goes is already haunted by someone else. He perseveres and finally finds it—a dusty, creaky home, perfect for haunting. But then he hears a knock at the door. It’s another little ghost in need of a place to roam. Will he scare the other ghost away or make room for a new friend?

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.
