Storytime Theme: Poetry (2025 Update)
I adore picture books and I love when they become their own work of art whether that’s through art or words, I truly believe that picture books are the artwork that the world most often overlooks. Today’s storytime lesson plan is an update on an older plan that I had done on poetry. Because picture books are such a great length, they seem to lend themselves to poetry in a very obvious way, each page turn brings another stanza. I made sure to share some recently published titles that you might have overlooked, but will be perfect read alouds for storytime.
I really think it’s important to share books that lean toward poetry at a young age because there are so many adults who are afraid poetry or at least afraid of not understanding poetry. Teaching kids that poetry is accessible, and dare I say, even fun needs to start at a young age. Combine a few of these titles, with some rhyming songs (something Raffi did so well!), and a couple of easy poetry activities and you’ve got a lesson plan that is sure to be a hit!
