Storytime Theme: President’s Day

With the America 250 celebration set for next year, you might want to try incorporating a President’s Day storytime into your schedule! It could be a great introduction to civil literacy teaching basic concepts to preschoolers about our democracy like voting for the president. You could even have your own election in the library to vote for your favorite children’s book character too.

I tried to keep this storytime pretty basic in terms of picture books, I didn’t want to get into anything too deep, especially if you’re gearing this lesson plan to toddlers and preschoolers. But, you could easily adapt this storytime for an older audience of elementary school age kids too. I grabbed a few songs that looked like they could be fun for little ones. I had never heard the James K. Polk song before, but with over 40 presidents, it great for kids to hear about one that’s not Washington or Lincoln. And finally, I found some fun crafts and activities to continue to extend the learning past the books.
