Storytime Theme: Ramadan
We’re continuing to celebrate holidays from religions and cultures around the world and today we say, Ramadan Mubarak! Ramadan is celebrate for about a month during the ninth month of the Islamic calendar and shifts throughout the year each year. For example, for 2025, Ramadan was celebrated from February 28th – March 29th, but in 2026 Ramadan will be earlier in the year from February 17th – March 19th. (I will say that dates vary a bit depending on what website you search for, but Ramadan will be celebrated around this time.)
Ramadan is a time for fasting, prayer, and reflection. While these activities can seem singular in nature, they are often celebrated together in communities at mosques and breaking the fast with family, friends, and neighbors. The mosque in my community offers a program for community members to attend to learn more about Ramadan and the Islam faith, we break fast together and are invited to prayers as well, before having a feast of delicious foods and treats. I appreciate that the mosque and members of the community create such a welcoming event, it’s been such a wonderful experience each year.
This storytime pulls some recently published children’s picture books about Ramadan and Eid together along with some music and rhymes and of course some crafts too! As I’ve said with each holiday, if you have members of your community who are interested in helping out, that’s the best! If you don’t, just make sure to do some research and be respectful and honest in your program. Teaching kids about cultures and religions at a young age allows them to better understand the world around them and may be beneficial when they meet someone who has those beliefs or comes from that culture.
