Top Ten Tuesday: Satisfying Book Series

I am not great at series and I’ll be the first to admit it! I’ll start a series and love the first book, but then it falls apart! Often, the rest of the series hasn’t been published yet and by the time the next book is published, I’ve often forgotten the important details from the first book and then have to make a hard decision.

Do I go back and spend the time re-reading the first book so that I can read the next one? Or do I hope I can remember enough and try reading the second book without any of the important information in my mind? It’s a tricky place to be. So, the easiest thing for me to do would be to wait for a series to be completely published before I start reading it. But, that means I could miss out on the hype of a great new book.

What I do love is a book series that lives in the same world and may be about different secondary characters where it’s not as important to remember all the details of the previous book. This type of series is sometimes called a companion series. As in, the next book is a companion to the first, not necessarily the second book in the same timeline with the same characters. This type of series work much better for my reading style and I enjoy them a lot more.

So, for now, I’ll read what I like and if something grabs my attention enough, I’ll try to make a point of reading the next book in the series. What about you? Do you like reading series or do you prefer standalone titles more?
